SUMMARY:Family Seining
DESCRIPTION:Join GTM Research Reserve on the second Saturday of each month for a guided family seining activity. Pull a seine net through Guana Lake\, collecting species of fish\, crabs\, and other habitats. Learn about the animals and their roles. All necessary gear including waders and boots will be provided. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER. \nDo I need a reservation to attend?\n\nYes\, register online by following the links provided above.\n\nIf I can’t make it\, how do I cancel my reservation?\n\nWhen you register\, you receive an email confirmation with information about canceling.\n\nHow old does my child need to be to attend? \n\nThere is no age limit\, but your child must be at least three feet tall to hold the seine net.\n\nWhat should I wear?\n\nAppropriate clothing for the outdoors is recommended. Dress in layers and prepare for any type of weather. Closed-toe shoes are encouraged and wearing flip-flops is discouraged. We provide booties and waders\, but you can bring your own gear.\n\nWhat should I bring?\n\nA reusable water bottle (that can be filled up onsite)\, insect repellent (strongly recommended)\, sunscreen\, and binoculars/cameras are suggested.\n\nCan I bring my dog? \n\nYes\, but keep in mind that all dogs must remain on a leash\, and all waste must be promptly cleaned by the owner. To be part of the seining activity\, two hands are needed. Please be mindful of other visitors when bringing a dog.\n\nWhere should I meet my guide?\n\nCLICK HERE for a Google Map. Your guide will be waiting at Guana Dam\, 15 minutes prior to the scheduled program. The event begins at 9 am.\n\nWhat will I catch? \n\nThe seine nets catch various types of fish\, crab\, shrimp\, shells\, and plant life.\n\nAre there any fees?\n\nOnly a $3/vehicle fee for parking (paid on arrival). Only cash is accepted.\n\nIs there anything else to see afterward?\n\nHave lunch at the Trailhead Pavilion and explore one of the many trails. You will also have access to the beaches at the South\, Middle\, and North access lots (for which your parking tag will apply for same-day use\, might as well get your $3 worth). Tour the Visitor Center free of admission. It is open Tuesday- Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

SUMMARY:If You Can Name It\, You Can Love It: A 5-Week Course in Birding
DESCRIPTION:Linda Burek\, a certified Florida Master Naturalist\, will lead this five-week course in birding\, “If You Can Name It\, You Can Love It.” She was the lead compiler for the St. Augustine Christmas Bird Count 2018-2021. She has also participated in weekly counts of nesting birds at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park. In addition\, Linda served on the Board of Directors for the St. Johns Audubon Society and led bird walks. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Saint Augustine Camera Club and has taught at the Flagler College Lifelong Learning Program. \nIn this 5-week course (Feb. 15\, 22\, March 1\, 8\, 15)\, you will learn: \n\nWhat makes the area supportive of many bird species.\nTips for identifying the most common birds in the area and where they can be found.\nHow to use birding applications to enhance your ability to identify birds and create a personal bird list.\nAccessible birding hot spots in the area.\nLocal resources to enhance your birding success.\n\nYou will also get out into the field to practice your skills. \nThe price for the course is $175 for members of Friends of GTM Research Reserve and $225 for non-members.  \nREGISTRATION AND A LIST OF REQUIRED BOOKS ARE HERE.

DESCRIPTION:The GTM Research Reserve offers you an opportunity to follow the wooded trail to the Matanzas River at the River-to-Sea Preserve. An interpretive guide will tell you about old Florida’s moss-laden trees\, seasonal flowering shrubs\, and Native American lore\, including how they used various plants for food\, beverage\, and medicine. The event is free\, but online registration is required. \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER. \nIs there a parking fee?\nNo. \nAre there public restrooms?\nYes. \nWhat should I wear?\nWear appropriate clothing for the outdoors. Dressing in layers and preparing for any weather is recommended. Closed-toe shoes\, not flip-flops\, are encouraged. \nWhat should I bring?\nA reusable water bottle (that can be filled up onsite)\, insect repellent (strongly recommended)\, sunscreen\, and binoculars/cameras are suggested. \nAre trails accessible for strollers?\nThe trails are not paved and have loose sand. Only strollers with big rugged\, all-terrain wheels are recommended. \nCan I bring my dog?\nFamily pets/dogs cannot join the educational hikes\, as they may distract participants and disrupt native wildlife. \nIs there anything else to see afterward?\nVisit the beautiful beach across the street. Heading further south\, you’ll find Washington Oaks Gardens State Park. DESCRIPTION:GTM Research Reserve will host its 15th State of the Reserve which features presentations on research and monitoring conducted by reserve scientists and visiting researchers from across the country. The 2025 science symposium will feature presentations on water quality\, plankton\, shellfish and coastal wetlands. There will also be exciting presentations about reptiles and amphibians\, fish\, mangroves\, bats\, mosquitos\, invasive plants\, storytelling and resource management. \nThe State of the Reserve registration has reached capacity.
