Citizen science opportunities at GTMNERR (Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve) play a crucial role in fostering environmental stewardship and scientific understanding. The research reserve's efforts are greatly enhanced by engaging citizens in the numerous research programs. By involving the local community in these initiatives, GTMNERR not only enhances the scale and efficiency of data collection but also empowers individuals to connect with and actively contribute to the preservation of the diverse ecosystems within the reserve. Monitoring of biodiversity in the reserve is expanded by the hard work of volunteers who make the following programs possible:
- NOAA’s Phytoplankton Monitoring Network
- FWC’s harmful algal bloom monitoring
- Freshwater marsh monitoring and management
- Sea turtle nesting surveys
- Quarterly reptile and amphibian surveys
- Monthly shorebird surveys
- Monthly butterfly surveys
- 5-year Gopher tortoise burrow surveys in the dunes and peninsula
