Nature’s Palette: Wildflower Course

Experience the beauty and science of native Florida wildflowers in this five-week immersive course. Led by seasoned naturalist and educator Richard Thomas, this course blends classroom instruction with real-world fieldwork to give participants the tools to identify, understand and appreciate the diverse plant life of the GTM Research Reserve.

With expert guidance, you’ll uncover the ecological importance of wildflowers and learn how to recognize and document them like a pro.

  • Week 1 (Sept. 20): Introduction to GTM Habitats & Florida Wildflowers
    Overview of barrier islands, marshes, and microclimates that shape local plant life.
  • Week 2 (Sept. 27): Plant Parts & ID Practice
    Learn key leaf and flower structures; practice with real samples in the garden.
  • Week 3 (Oct. 4): Backyard Wildflowers & Invasives
    Tips for native gardening at home and how to recognize invasive species.
  • Week 4 (Oct. 11): Observation Ethics & Technology
    Explore tools like iNaturalist and best practices for plant photography and documentation.
  • Week 5 (Oct. 18): Guided Field Session
    Apply your new knowledge on GTM’s trails in a hands-on guided walk.
